What business are you really in?

Show of hands; who thinks McDonalds is in the hamburger business?

They’re not. They are in the real estate business. They own valuable real estate on almost ever freeway exit across the country, valuable space in every major city in the US and some pretty hot properties in almost every country. Selling hamburgers just pays the rent and keep the property value up.

Now, imagine for a moment if McDonalds decides they no longer want to sell hamburgers. What would they convert their stores into overnight and what market could they saturate in a matter of weeks?

Now you’re thinking.

I was inspired by a Twitter tweets by Guy Kawasaki with this link to a speech on journalism, delivered by Brian Storm to a graduating class from the Missouri School of Journalism.

Figure out what business you are really in. And then own it, change it, whatever, but make it yours.

About Gerard McLean

Hello. This will almost always be a boring space. You can best learn about who I am by reading my blog posts more in depth. If you have a more burning desire to know more about me, you should first see a doctor. Or at least read my story. It will tell you all you need to know to make wild assumptions of me that are probably not true.
